A self-extinguishing monovinyl aromatic polymer composition contains 2-12% by wt. of an ester of 2,3,3-tribromoallyl alcohol and a C1- 12 organic acid. The polymer may be a high impact styrene polymer which contains 2-20% of polybutadiene or a butadienestyrene copolymer and 98-80% of chemically combined styrene, or a polymer of styrene, vinyltoluene, vinylxylene, isopropylstyrene, p-tert.-butylstyrene or chloro- or dichloro-styrene. The ester may be derived from an acid which is benzoic, salicylic, toluic, anisic, phenyl-carbonic or -acetic, phthalic, formic, acetic, methoxy-acetic, n-valeric, levulinic, undecanoic, oxalic, succinic, adipic; 1,2,3,4-butane tetracarboxylic, fumaric, maleic, acrylic, methacrylic, or 2,3,3-tribromo acrylic. The ester may be added either to the polymer e.g. in solution in methylene chloride or to the monomer, e.g. styrene, which is then polymerized (a) in aq. suspension using benzoyl peroxide as catalyst to produce beads, or (b) in bulk using di-tert.-butyl peroxide as catalyst. |
