PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water absorbent which is biodegradable and has a high gel strength and a high water absorption capability in an aqueous sodium chloride solution and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The water absorbent comprises galactomannan, a derivative thereof, and polyvalent metal ions, has such a heterogeneity that the degree of crosslinking at the surface of particles of the absorbent differs from that at the insides of the particles, and has such characteristics that both the amount of absorbed water in deionized water and that in an aqueous sodium chloride solution with a concentration of 5 wt.% or lower are at least 20 times the own weight.
