PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium excellent in running durability and shelf like and capable of high density recording. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is the one having a non- magnetic flexible substrate and a magnetic layer provided on the substrate and containing ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent and characterized in that the magnetic layer comprises zirconia powder having 0.005-0.2μm average primary particle size or the one having a non-magnetic flexible substrate, a non-magnetic layer provided on the substrate and containing non-magnetic powder and a bonding agent and a magnetic layer provided on the non-magnetic layer and containing ferromagnetic powder and a bonding agent and characterized in that the magnetic layer comprises zirconia powder having 0.005-0.2μm average primary particle size.
