A brake installation for cars has an electronic control apparatus with a brake pedal via whose operation a pilot control pressure can be specified by the driver and an auxiliary brake system that is operable independently by the brake pedal. Devices are provided by which the auxiliary brake system is activated so that the vehicle comes to a standstill corresponding to a given brake force control when neither the gas pedal of the car nor the brake pedal is operated and the vehicle speed lies below a given threshold. The given brake force control is designed so that the vehicle comes to a standstill inside a given time.
