PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a poly(porphyrin) capable of easily controlling the scission and reconstruction of a chain composed of porphyrin unit and provide a method for producing the compound. SOLUTION: The objective poly(porphyrin) contains, as a constituent unit, an imidazolylporphyrin metal complex expressed by general formula (I) M is a metallic atom selected from Zn, Ga, Ru, Fe and Co; R1 is an alkyl, an alkyl-substituted aryl or an alkyloxy-substituted aryl; Im is a substituted or unsubstituted imidazolyl group of formulas shown below (R2 is H or methyl); and (n) is an integer of >=1; in the general formula (1), the center metal M may be coordinated to at least one of the porphyrin rings at both terminals}.
