PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a locking device for a mover that can rigidly lock a mover such as a work holder into a position wherein back motion thereof is precluded, via a simple structure and without a locking-dedicated actuator. SOLUTION: An actuator 25 moves a mover 22 back and forth, and stops 44 positionally restrain the mover 22 in an advanced position. Engaging and disengaging means 28 engage the mover 22 and the actuator 25. The engaging and disengaging means 28 are disengaged when the mover 22 is positionally limited by the stops 44 upon advancing motion of the actuator 25. In this disengagement condition, only the actuator 25 is allowed to advance further, and also a wedge member 35 constituting means 40 for increasing force to prevent back motion offers a wedge action to increase back-motion-preventing force applied to the mover 22 by the actuator 25.
