A polyamide having free amino groups and an amine number of at least 50 is prepared from a polyamine having at least 3 primary or secondary amino groups in the molecule and a polymerized unsaturated animal or vegetable oil. The polyamine may be of formula NH2(RNH)xRNH2 where R is a C2- 4 alkylene chain optionally having methyl or ethyl substituents and x=1-4. Amines specified are diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, pentaethylene hexamine and mixtures thereof. Natural oils specified are linseed, soya, tung. perilla, oiticia and fish oil. The reaction may be V perilla, oiticia and fish oil. The reaction may be carried out at 100-300 DEG C. under a N2 atmosphere and glycerol and excess amine present in the product may be removed by distillation under reduced pressure. Alternatively the glycerol may be retained as a plasticizer. The product may contain imidazoline groups in addition to amide links and be suitable for curing an epoxy resin containing terminal epoxy groups derived from a polyhydric phenol and epichlorohydrin. The epoxy resin may be used as an adhesive, surface coating, moulding, potting or laminating material. In Example 9 xylol and n butanol are used as solvents in curing the epoxy resin. |
