PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a high carbon hot rolled steel sheet excellent in workability and productivity, obviating spheroidizing annealing after hot rolling. SOLUTION: High carbon steel containing, by mass, 0.2% C or more is subjected to hot rolling, is thereafter coiled at >650 to 720 deg.C, or, in a state in which intermediate temperature in the surface of a runner table is controlled to 650 deg.C or more, the steel is coiled at >650 to 720 deg.C, and within 20 min after the coiling, loaded to a slow cooling cover and retained at 600 to 720 deg.C for 15 hr or more.
