Plant substrate includes one or more fungicides or bactericides and a preservative to delay decomposition of organic material present in the substrate. Plant substrate, which is useful for growth of plants, comprises organic materials which have been mixed, optionally in separate steps, with a combination of materials which delays decomposition of the organic material. The combination comprises: (a) a first component comprising one or more fungicides or bactericides which can protect the organic materials against attack by fungi, algae or bacteria; and (b) a second component which comprises a preservative.
