PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery using a nonaqueous electrolyte and having a large capacity and superior cyclic life. SOLUTION: In the secondary battery using nonaqueous electrolyte, a negative electrode active material is provided with a carbon-containing phase A and a crystal phase B containing an element occuluding and emitting an alkali metal as its major constituent and having an average crystal grain size of 0.001 μm or more and 10 μm or less.
