PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique to improve the contrast of an projected and displayed image in a projector. SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with an illumination optical system to emit illumination light, a liquid crystal light valve to modulate the light from the illumination optical system according to the image information, and a projection optical system to project the image light formed on the exit face of the liquid crystal light valve. The liquid crystal light valve 300R has a liquid crystal panel 301R, first and second polarizing plates 302Ri, 302Ro disposed on the entrance face side and exit face side of the liquid crystal panel, and first and second optical compensation plates 305R, 306R disposed between the liquid crystal panel and the first and second polarizing plates, respectively. By using the aforgmentioned liquid crystal light valve, the incident angle dependence of the contrast of the image light formed on the exit face of the liquid crystal light valve can be decreased, and the contrast of the image projected and displayed by the projection optical system can be improved. |
