The invention is a method for banding and rastering a datastream for a page image in which the main processing unit (MPU 16) performs the steps of interpreting a datastream (14) containing a specification of the page image, generating a plurality of rendering commands from the datastream, dividing the page into a plurality of bands, ordering the commands into the bands, accessing the commands from the bands, allocating memory to a band for storing a bitmap of that band; and the graphics processing unit (GPU 18) performs the steps of processing one or more rendering commands to generate a bitmap of the band, monitoring access to the memory to limit processing of the command or commands to the band, and dispatching the band to a print engine (20). |
