The method involves increasing the oxygen concentration of the engine by supplying oxygen-rich air. The oxygen-rich air is generated from normal ambient air by a membrane method. The ambient air is compressed and brought into a space with a membrane (2) forming at least one wall. The membrane has different diffusion rates for oxygen and nitrogen, so that nitrogen or oxygen diffuses into a second chamber. The nitrogen-rich air is discharged to the atmosphere and the oxygen-rich air is conducted to the internal combustion engine (1).
