PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve operability concerning changing of a reading mode by a picture reader capable of changing a reading mode by operation input even in the middle of reading the pictures of a plurality of pages of originals. SOLUTION: When a sheet scan start key is depressed, a contact sensor is moved to a sheet original reading position (S603, 605). When there are originals, carrying of one sheet is started (S606, 607). When a read timing sensor detects the original, whether a reading wait flag is off or not (not in the middle of changing the reading mode) is decided (S608, 609). When it is not off, carrying of the original is stopped to postpone scan start (S610). When it is off, reading mode data are acquired (S611) and the reading mode is set to a scanner (S612). Then, when carrying of the original is already stopped, carrying of the original is started again (S613, 614) and one page is scanned (S615).
