PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shield excavator and the method of digging capable of easily changing the digging direction economically, quickly, and safely. SOLUTION: In the inside of a cylindrical body as a parent shield machine body, an globular rotating body is rotatably housed. In the inside of the rotating body, a child shield machine is housed. The propulsion port of the child shield machine is installed on the side surface of the parent shield machine. The propulsion port is filled and closed with a filler having a strength capable of easily excavating by a child shield machine. The part larger in section is excavated by the parent shield machine, and when reaches a changing spot in the digging direction, it moves forward while excavating the filler filled into the propulsion port, and then a tunnel of a smaller sectional area is dug by a child shield machine in the direction nearly perpendicular to the digging direction of the parent shield machine.
