This invention relates to a method for isolating regulatory T cells from a cell mixture, which method comprises: (i) encapsulating the cell mixture in a matrix material to provide a plurality of microencapsulated cells, said matrix material being provided with a plurality of binding moieties each of which is capable of selectively binding to a secreted molecule selected from cytokines and chemokines characteristic of the regulatory T cells to be isolated; (ii) incubating the microencapsulated cells under conditions and for a time sufficient to permit production of the selected secreted molecule and capture of the secreted molecule within the matrix material; and (iii) detecting and isolating microencapsulated cells having the secreted molecule in the encapsulating layer. |
