PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of dealing with various needs by improving the convenience of the image reader connected to another network such as LAN as well together with a public line. SOLUTION: An image read by a reading part 14 can be transmitted from a public line 5 through a modem 18 and an NCU 17 by facsimile and transmitted to a client connected through a communication part 16 to a LAN 3. Corresponding to the destination to transmit the image, a main control part 11 changes a parameter to be set to the reading part 14. In the case of transmitting the image to the client connected through the communication part 16 to the LAN 3, the image is converted to an image format corresponding to the client and can be transmitted by an existent protocol. Besides, after transmission, the transmitted image can be preserved in an image memory 19 as it is.
