A rechargeable battery has an electrolyte, a nickel hydroxide anode, a hydrogen cathode and a charging device operating at a temperature between -10 deg C and -30 deg C that is below a temperature in range -10 deg C to 5 deg C at which the battery starts to discharge. The battery also has a controller automatically determining the total charge needed under ideal charging conditions.
