[Also in Division E1] A rotary brush 16 on a road sweeping machine is carried by arms 11 and hydraulically counterbalanced by a differential piston in a cylinder 20, the balancing piston 22, Fig. 2, having opposed surfaces of different area which are both subjected to the same adjustable pressure liquid-e.g. by providing an aperture 29 therein. The pressure liquid is controlled by an adjustable overflow valve. The overflow valve 44 may be arranged, e.g. as shown in Fig. 1, so that it is adjusted automatically according to brush wear. The cylinder 20 also contains a floating piston 26 which can engage the piston 22 for raising the brush 16 out of action. An hydraulic circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), includes two three-position valves (35), (36) respectively controlling reversible brush drive motor(s) (40) and the floating piston (26). The brush 16 may be mounted on the front or rear of a vehicle 10 and may have its axis vertical or horizontal. |
