PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal processing circuit that uses a Y gamma correction circuit to effectively improve the contrast in dark parts as its major feature in a scene having many dark parts. SOLUTION: For example, on the basis of a comparison result between an input luminance signal and a dark point, a dark part detection circuit 15 detects the rate of the dark part shared in the input luminance signal. Then the output of the dark part detection circuit 15 controls 1st and 2nd gain control circuits 16a, 16b. Thus, the gain of a dark part expansion circuit 11 that amplifies a signal not higher than the gamma of the input luminance signal and the gain of a bright part compression circuit 12 that compressed a signal higher than the gamma of the input luminance signal are respectively automatically adjusted.
