PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the driving efficiency by preventing a roller bit from being abraded and fractured and improving the durability. SOLUTION: This replacement control method for a tunnel excavator uses the tunnel excavator having a divided structure of a middle barrel inner shield 2A and a middle barrel outer shield 2B mutually and axially sliding a middle barrel shield 2 of a shield body 4, and controls the turning after completing the excavation process of holding a rear barrel shield 3 to a natural ground, advancing the front barrel shield 1, and rotating a cutter head 5. This method is provided with a first process retreating the middle barrel inner shield 2A toward the middle barrel outer shield 2B by a prescribed distance and a second process releasing the holding of the rear barrel shield 3 to the natural ground, holding the front barrel shield 1 to the natural ground, and drawing the middle barrel outer shield 2B toward the middle barrel inner shield 2A. This is automatically controlled so that the first process is executed after completing the excavation process and the second process is executed after completing the first process.
