Method of monitoring the operation of a yarn winding machine having a yarn receiving coil and a drum for guiding the yarn onto said coil, said yarn having a predetermined reciprocating traverse stroke range, consists of the steps of monitoring the range of said traverse stroke, and interrupting the yarn winding operation in response to a range of the traverse stroke which falls short of said predetermined range, and device for carrying out the method.
