PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and lightweight transmission for automobile relatively facilitated in the shifting operation and to be sufficiently applied for a compact car at a low cost in comparison with a conventional hydraulic one. SOLUTION: A shifting mechanism C for shifting operation is provided with plural shift mechanism units 1a, 1b, 1c having a shift fork and a select mechanism unit 2 to be selectively engaged with one of each shift mechanism unit 1a, 1b, 1c. A select motor 14 for driving the select mechanism unit 2 so as to be selectively engaged with one of the shift mechanism units 1a, 1b, 1c and a shift motor 15 for driving the selected one shift mechanism unit 1a, 1b, 1c for shifting with the shift fork are connected to the select mechanism unit 2. Any one of the motors 14, 15 is commonly used as a starter motor for starting an engine.
