PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hardness testing machine using an actuator for controlling generated force and having a simple adjusting function. SOLUTION: In a hardness testing machine 1, a load is applied to a load arm 4 via a plate spring 7 by means of a load arm operating unit 6, and a material characteristic of a sample is evaluated on the basis of indentation formed on the sample surface by means of an indenter 3. In adjustment of a load, a load cell (r) is mounted, and by means of the load cell (r), a load applied to the load arm 4 is measured, so that adjustment is carried out for applying an accurate load.
