PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling a spindle motor of an optical disk play system is provided to quickly restore the spindle motor into a normal speed, when the optical disk play system is focus-dropped or out of a locked state in a play state, so as to shorten the time when the system is recovered to a normal play state after a wrong operation or a shock. CONSTITUTION: An RF unit(16) generates an FOK(Focus OK) signal by corresponding to a detected RF signal, and converts the RF signal into an EFM(Eight to Fourteen Modulation) signal, then outputs the EFM signal. A CLV(Constant Linear Velocity) controller(18) compares the EFM signal with a frame synchronous signal, and outputs a compared result as a spindle error signal, then responds to an LKFS(LocK Frame Sync) signal to output a lock signal. A spindle filter(20) performs a low band filtering for the spindle error signal. An OR gate(26) responds to the FOK signal and the lock signal, and generates a selection signal. A selector(22) selectively outputs one of the low band filtered-signal and a signal having a predetermined level, by responding to the selection signal. A spindle motor driver(24) responds to the selected signal, and drives a spindle motor.
