PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating composition, a metallic base coating and a coating method capable of doing 2 coats/1 bake coating-finishing which give good appearance (metallic feeling, smoothness, glass and the like), being excellent in quality (chemical resistance, adhesion between layers, water resistance, weather resistance and the like) and usable for metallic coating and nonmetallic coating. SOLUTION: After coating the surface of a substrate with a metallic base coating prepared by compounding a metallic pigment into a coating composition comprising a organic solvent (S) and a cellulose ester-modified vinylic copolymer (I), as a vehicle component, which is obtained by copolymerizing 5-40 wt.% of a cellulose ester derivative (a) obtained by ring-opening graft polymerization of cyclic esters on a cellulose ester having hydroxy groups with 95-60 wt.% of a vinyl monomer compound (b) (total of (a) and (b) is 100%), a transparent topcoat of a thermoplastic resin is applied in an uncured state followed by baking the coating film.
