The workpiece grinding machine is equipped with a number of grinding wheels, discs or belts, and incorporates a system which prevents the workpiece holder (2) from coming into contact with any grinding surface which is not currently in use. The different grinding surfaces (31,81) are located in parallel planes and are spaced at intervals (a) from one another which are at least half the size of the workpiece holder block. The machine's grinding wheels (70, 71) are set on the ends of arms on a support (72) which is able to pivot about an axis parallel to the wheels' axes of rotation by a rack and pinion mechanism to place either of the grinding wheels in the machining position. Each grinding wheel can be driven by its own motor or by a common motor.
