PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston for an internal combustion engine capable of reducing a friction of a cylinder inner surface as much as possible. SOLUTION: A piston 1 which has a crown surface part 2, a ring land part 3 following the crown surface part 2, a skirt part 4 following the ring land part 3, a pin boss part 8 formed in the underside of the ring land part 3, and an apron part 9 connecting the pin boss part 8 with the skirt part 4 is provided. A notch 15 in which a lower end is open and an opening dimension (Wa) at the opened lower end is larger than a width dimension (Wb) close to the crown surface part 2 is provided in the lower end side of the skirt part 4. A circumferential dimension of the skirt part 4 formed between the notch 15 and the apron part 9 is such that a lower side dimension of the skirt part 4 is smaller than a dimension thereof close to the crown surface part 2.
