PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a book-handling apparatus which can surely eliminate foreign articles between pages of the book such as a bankbook or the like beforehand, and can smoothly execute processes afterwards. SOLUTION: A means which forms an opening part of a larger breadth than a book (gate 14 which can be rotated by a motor in the clockwise direction or counterclockwise direction) is set to a lower part of a transfer path. One of a former half page and a latter half page is held by a transfer roller pair (2 or 3) in the vicinity of one end of the opening part formed by the means. At the same time, the other of the former half page and latter half page of the book is made a free end to hang down from the opening part by its own weight. A foreign article mixed between pages of the book can be dropped down by its weight and removed. Moreover, a hitting lever 20 interlocking with a solenoid 19 is set, so that the foreign article mixed between the pages can be more surely oscillated and dropped through the vibration by a hitting operation.
