PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To specify foreign matter in an MR head without destructing the MR head. SOLUTION: In a state such that a power source 9 is connected to one of any two electrodes among a WRITE (write) electrode terminal 13, a READ (read) electrode 15 of the MR head and an electrode connected to the head 11, and an OBIC amplifier 8 is connected to another electrode, a device is constituted so that the area including the head 11 is irradiated with a laser beam from a laser source. Then, a reflected image based on a reflected beam from the area and an internal photoelectronic effect image according to a signal based on the carrier by the internal photoelectronic effect generated in the area are displayed in an overlapped state on a color CRT 7, thereby specifying the foreign matter existing in the MR head.
