A positive electrode active material for lithium secondary battery that exhibits a high volume capacity density, ensuring high safety and excels in uniform applicability and that even at high charging voltage, excels in charge/discharge cycle durability and low temperature performance. There is provided a process for producing a lithium- containing composite oxide of the general formula LipNx MmOzFa (wherein N is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Co, Mn and Ni; M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of transition meta elements other than the N elements, Al and alkaline earth metal elements; and 0. 9<=p<=1.2, 0.9<=x<1.00, 0<m<=0.03, 1. 9<=z<=2.2, x+m=1, and 0<=a<=0.02), comprising subjecting a solution having a complex containing M element (M element- containing complex) dissolved in an organic solvent, an N source and a lithium source optionally together with a fluorine source to the steps of mixing, organic solvent removal and firing. |
