PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the deviation of the actual aligning direction of the liquid crystal from the rubbed direction. SOLUTION: In this method, the manufacture of an optical compensation film, which is obtained by continuously rubbing a transparent polymer film with a rubbing roll and subsequently forming a polymerizable liquid crystal layer, is performed. In this case, the rubbing is performed in a condition that the rubbing density L, defined with the formula, is >=0.05 m and <0.5 m. L= N×l×(1+R/v) (In the formula, N expresses the number of the rubbing rolls, l expresses the contact length between the film and the rubbing roll, R expresses the circumferential speed of the rubbing roll and v expresses the conveying speed of the film).
