PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup unit that sets the reference level of a video signal outputted from an imaging device, such as a CCD on the basis of a reference value and to provide a control method for the image pickup unit. SOLUTION: In the case in which a digital video signal resulting from A/D converting the output signal of a CCD 1 is outputted and a standard level (black level) of the digital video signal is set, on the basis of an integrated average value of a reference signal (optical black), a integration start point and an integration number of the reference signal can be designated. Utilizing the reference signal to be transmitted first, that receives integration averaging or designating the integration start position and the integration number for one field period of the digital video signal outputted by a plurality of number of times of reading from the CCD 1 for one field period can set a reference level of the video signal by having only to prepare one signal processing system, even if video signal having a plurality of video signals existing within on field period are received.
