A developing device, wherein a width and a cutting-in amount in a developing nip interval between an image carrier (1) and a developing roller (4) are se t so that a moving speed of an elastic developing roller at a local area in contact with the surface of the image carrier becomes slower gradually starting at a contact start point and then recovers gradually to the origina l speed.
