PURPOSE: A method for recognizing paper money by scanning and reading all the consecutive numbers of checks while transferring the check in a transverse direction is provided, thereby solving an instrumental limit on transferring checks and remarkably reducing a recognizing time. CONSTITUTION: The recognition method for paper money comprises: picking up consecutive numbers of paper money and forming picked up data; extracting consecutive numbers data by binarization of the picked up data; dividing each number of the extracted consecutive numbers data into a plurality of areas and then comparing with standard pattern data; selecting consecutive numbers corresponding to standard pattern data having minimum error and outputting to a consecutive numbers expressing means or a storing means.
