PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescence(EL) element suitable as a backlight for a color liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: Organic EL layers 8r, 8g, 8b are arranged in a stripe form on a transparent substrate 1. The luminescent colors of the organic EL layers 8r, 8g, 8b are thus mixed to provide while light emission. In the organic EL layers 8r, 8g, 8b, a non-transparent metal film is used, instead of a transparent electrode, as an anode 2. The anode 2 is formed to cover only the side edges of the organic EL layers 8r, 8g, 8b. Therefore, the organic EL layers 8r, 8g, 8b excluding the side edges are exposed from the anode 2 in emitting a light. As a result, low light transmissivity and high resistance are achieved, no brittle ITO is required and brightness and yield are improved.
