PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact self-ballasted fluorescent lamp having a good rising characteristic of a light flux by introducing such a structure that mercury eventually absorbed to the phosphor can easily be re-emitted. SOLUTION: With seals 1a3 interposed, a pair of electrodes 1d1 are installed at the ends of a translucent discharge vessel 1a furnished with a phosphor layer 1c containing a metal oxide based on Y2O3 with a part exposed at the inner surface where a bent discharge path is formed internally, and a thin pipe 1a4 is provided protruding out from the seal part and having communication into the vessel 1a, and therein main amalgam 1e is accommodated, and a fluorescent lamp 1 furnished with auxiliary amalgam 1f is installed inside the vessel 1a. The metal oxide based on Y2O3 may be attached to the inner surface of the phosphor layer 1c in the form of a thin film or particulates. It is merely required that the metal oxide based on Y2O3 is attached to the phosphor layer 1c, at least in the region positioned near the auxiliary amalgam 1f.
