Positioning steel cords in rubber sheet, includes keeping cords equidistant from magnetic sensors and comparing distance of sheet surfaces from other sensors. The positioning of metal bands within a rubber layer is determined by keeping the bands a fixed distance from a first magnetic sensor and moving a support so that the bands are kept the same distance from a second magnetic sensor. The distance of opposite surfaces of the sheet from respective position sensors on opposite sides of the sheet are measured. The dis-equlibrium of the bands in the sheet is determined by comparing these distances. One of the position sensors is integral with the second magnetic sensor. An Independent claim is included for an apparatus for performing as above includes two magnetic sensors, two positioning sensors. One magnetic sensor and one positioning sensor are mounted together on a movable support. A processor compares the distances measured by the position sensors.
