PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound needle which can enlarge the tolerance of yarn-feeding conditions, when the yarn fed into the needle is caught by a hook. SOLUTION: This compound needle 1 for a knitting machine comprises a needle body 3 and a slider 5. The needle body 3 is received in a needle groove formed in the needle bed of a flat knitting machine. The needle body 3 and the slider 5 are relatively moved to open or close the hook by the actions of a tongue 43 disposed at the tip of the slider 5. Therein, a bent portion 41 itself having elasticity and having an S-shape on the side view, and the tongue 43 at the tip side of the bent portion are arranged in the slider 5. A cam surface is disposed on the needle body 3. The cam surface is engaged with the bent portion of the slider 5 to downward energize the tongue 43 in a state combined with the slider 5. The cam surface also makes the tongue 43 to upward move, when the slider 5 and the needle body 3 are relatively moved to close the hook. The cam surface further makes the tongues 43 to downward move, when the hook is opened.
