A magnetic recording medium having a non-magnetic substrate and a magnetic layer formed thereon through applying a magnetic liquid containing a ferromagnetic powder, characterized in that the non-magnetic substrate has a surface roughness of the face having the magnetic layer thereon of 1 to 6 nm in terms of average center line roughness Ra, the ferromagnetic powder has a specific surface area according to the BET method of 30 m<2>/g or more, and the magnetic layer has a thickness of 0.1 to 0.5 mu m, contains a lubricating agent (1) comprising a higher fatty acid or a fatty acid derivative in an amount of 10 to 25 parts relative to 100 parts of the ferromagnetic powder and an electrically conductive non-magnetic powder having an average particle diameter of 0.1 mu m or less for carrying the lubricating agent (1) and is coated and impregnated with a lubricating agent (2) comprising a fluorine-containing lubricant. A magnetic recording medium having an elastic supporter and, formed thereon, a magnetic layer comprising a ferromagnetic powder and a binder as main components, characterized in that the magnetic layer contains, as a fabricating agent, an ester compound (A) derived from a fatty acid having 3 or more branches and 9 to 18 carbon atoms and an alcohol having 3 or more branches and 8 to 17 carbon atoms. |
