PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an appropriate image for automatically visually examining a cap by picking up by a CCD camera an image of an inner face of the cap from above a ring-shaped light-emitting part which illuminates from above, and setting a convex lens between the light-emitting part and the cap. SOLUTION: An inner face of a cap 1 is illuminated with a light of a ring- shaped light-emitting part 2. A reflecting light of an end part A of a packing 1a is refracted by a convex lens 4 towards an axial center and brought into a CCD camera 3 through an optical path A, C and D. A wing 1b is present on an extension line L of a segment CD. The A in the obtained image is a position of a point B on the line L, and a background becomes a blue face of the packing 1a. A red filter 3a is set to an entrance of the CCD camera 3 thereby making the wing 1b easy to see with respect to the blue of the packing 1a. An image-processing apparatus 5 scans radially in a scanning area of the image. The number of scanning lines is counted when the number of dark images is smaller than a sum of parts corresponding to respective thicknesses of the wing 1b and the cap 1. When the number of scanning lines exceeds a set number, it is judged that a short wing is present.
