A rolling bearing cage made from steel is nitrided to form a compound layer 1 on its surface, comprising a dense layer 2 of thickness of 3žm to 20žm and a porous layer 3 of thickness of 2žm to 25žm. The surface of said compound layer may comprise a nitride and oxonitride and/or oxide layer having a thickness of 3.5žm to 30žm and may further comprise a sulphurised layer having a thickness of 0.1žm to 10žm. The porosity of said porous layer is preferably 10% to 60%. Preferably, the average surface oxygen concentration of said compound layer is 1.0% to 25.0% by weight.
