PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject resin containing a hydroxyl group in the molecule, having a narrow molecular weight distribution, a low molecular weight and excellent hue while maintaining a fixed softening point by copolymerizing a specific styrene-based monomer with a specified phenol-based monomer in a certain molar ratio so as to specify a molecular weight, etc. SOLUTION: (A) A styrene-based monomer of formula I (R1 to R4 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl) (preferably isopropenyltoluene, etc.), is copolymerized with (B) a phenol-based monomer of formula II (R5 to R7 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl) (preferably isopropenylphenol) in the molar ratio of the component A/B of 99/1 to 50/50 in the presence of a catalyst such as boron trifluoride phenolate complex generally at -30 to 50 deg.C for 1-2 hours to give a polymer having 200-3,000 weight-average molecular weight and <=1.5 molecular weight distribution. This resin is useful for a hot-melt adhesive, a tackifier for a pressure- sensitive adhesive, a printing ink, etc.
