PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a magnetic recording medium that improves a problem due to electrification caused by friction, has good traveling performance and does not cause a problem such as the generation of a discharge noise as a magnetic recording medium used for a high density magnetic recording. SOLUTION: A nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder, carbon black and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a magnetic powder and a binder are successively laminated on a nonmagnetic substrate to obtain the objective magnetic recording medium. The nonmagnetie powder such as hematite or titanium dioxide and the carbon black in the nonmagnetic layer have been chemically bonded. Since the carbon black is previously bonded to the nonmagnetic powder and dispersed in the binder, a good C-N ratio and superior surface properties are ensured and surface resistance can be lowered even in the case of a low carbon black content. A defective traveling due to electrification is prevented and a problem such as the generation of a discharge noise is not caused.
