A method and system of protocol determination for a mobile station. A mobile station according to the disclosed embodiments can vary the manner in which it scans for systems and which protocol or protocols it scans for depending on the country in which the mobile station is located. In a disclosed embodiment, a mobile station, when activated, (102) differentiates between areas that require a particular protocol, for example, GSM, and areas that require a different protocol, for example, IS-136 (108). In another disclosed embodiment, a mobile station can search only for systems on a particular protocol, for example, GSM, in some countries and only for systems on a different protocol, for example, IS-136, in other countries (110). In another disclosed embodiment, a mobile station can search for the best system regardless of protocol or within a particular subset of protocols depending on the country (114).
