A gateway comprising transcoding means

The present invention is related to a gateway that inter-works between a first telecommunication network and a second telecommunication network. The gateway comprises transcoding means to transform data represented according to a first encoding type used by the first network into the data represented according to a second encoding type used by the second network. The gateway furthermore comprises first transcoding free operation means to inter-operate with at least a second transcoding free operation means. In this way the gateway is enabled to optimize the use of encoding types during transportation of data from its source to its destination via this gateway.
