The invented catalyst for polymerization of ethylene and copolymerization of ethylene with other {alpha}-olefins contains (a) zirconium or hafnium bis(cyclopentadienyl)bis(amide) derivative of the general formula I, in which M represents zirconium or hafnium, Re1, Re2, Re3 a Re4 represent each individually alkyl with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms or phenyl, and Cp represents each cyclopentadienyl, indenyl or fluorenyl group, that are either unsubstituted or substituted with at least one alkyl containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or both the groups Cp are coupled by a bridge structure of the carbon atoms, and (b) aluminoxane functioning as a co-catalyst, whereby the ratio of Al/M in the catalyst is in the range of 100 to 10 000.
