Control method for an internal combustion engine in order to compensate valve failure

Four stroke engine is protected after valve failure by detecting which valve has failed and cutting off fuel supply and ignition to affected cylinder. The cylinder (10) is following a first pattern if the failure occurs for an admission valve (18) and a second if the failure occurs for an exhaust valve (19). If explosive mixture is in the combustion chamber (12) and admission valve failure is detected, remaining admission valves are closed and exhaust valve opened or closed according to exhaust condition. If there is no risk of explosion, exhaust valve is closed and admission valve opened or closed according to losses.
