PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound which is a p-type liquid crystal compound having low viscosity and large refractive anisotropy, and useful as, especially, a quickly responsive nematic liquid crystal material with large temperature range for electrooptical liquid crystal displays. SOLUTION: This compound is a compound of formula I [R is a (substituted) 1-8C alkyl, a (substituted) alkoxy or the like; n is 0 or 1; ring A is a trans-1,4- cyclohexylene or a (substituted) 1,4-phenylene, when n is 1; L is CH2CH2 or a single bond; X1 to X3 are each H or F, and at least one of them is F; Xa and Xb are each H or F; Z is C1, cyano or the like], for example, a 1-fluoro-2-(4 C-trifluoromethoxyphenyl)ethynyl-6-propylnaphthalene of formula II. The compound of formula I can be produced, for example, by reacting a compound of formula III obtained by using a 2-bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene as starting substance with a compound of formula IV in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a copper catalyst.
