PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a structure of detecting the opening and closing of a vehicle door capable of detecting an incompletely closed condition of the door. SOLUTION: When a door 10 is in a closed condition for a vehicle body 20, a light emitting element and a light receiving element provided on the vehicle body 20 and the door 10 to face each other, and the information on the operation, etc., of, for example, a power window is converted to the light signal and can be transmitted and received. When the door is incompletely closed, the light emitting element and the light receiving element face a reflecting member 24A provided on the door side, the light signal transmitted from the vehicle side is returned to the vehicle side, and received by the light receiving element, and the incompletely closed condition is detected based thereon.
